i was really looking forward to this cat door but it leaves SO much to be desired. I have relatively small cats - but only 1 of my 5 cats is small enough to fit through this tiny door. I've grown to trust PetSafe products but this has to be one of the worst. The dimensions of this aren't well advertised and the overall design is poorer quality. Despite that this is to be installed in a door, there is zero attempt to protect the battery compartment from moisture infiltration, especially important when installed on doors that swing outward. I am giving 2 stars rather than 1 only because my one cat can actually use it.My advise for Petsafe - make this larger, edit the desciption to point out the dimension, and include at least low-level water infiltration protection - aka a foam pad that can also help the batteries stay in place.I would NOT recommend anyone buy this unless you have teeny, tiny cats.
This product has been working well for months to keep our outdoor cat's food safe from freeloaders. However, we just caught a raccoon that was able to bypass the chip controlled access. I assume he was using his claws to depress the two lock pins at the bottom of the door. That or sheer brute force.
The advertisement for this cat door is a little misleading. Although there is a two-way option,It only limits chipped cat entry in one direction (not both ways). If all you have is a single chipped cat, this can work to allow your cat to move in one direction and block all others (cats or critters) in the opposite direction. If you have multiple cats and want to allow one to move through the door in both directions and block all others, then this door does not do the job. Pretty much the two-way functionality only blocks unchipped creatures one way and allows all others to move freely in the opposite direction (chipped or not). One can possibly install the door reversed so that the door limits which cats leaves the houses but lets anyone in but you would risk getting wild critters inside your house. Also, the passage is very small and is a little too tight for most cats.
We bought and installed our PetSafe cat door in 2021. As of 2025, four years later, the door is still performing flawlessly. A+ for durabiility. The door is in an unheated Northeast US exterior location exposed to summer heat, rain, and freezing temperatures in winter, and it has held up to our expectations. Battery life is great - I'm always surprised when it needs a new battery as I can never remember having replaced it last.We installed it in a sash window in the basement by fitting the door into a painted plywood panel, sliding the window sash up, and installing the plywood panel in the window opening. Of course a little air leaks through the small gaps in the door, but it is generally weather tight and does not admit a material draft or breeze. Installation was quick and easy. The one problem we had was that a raccoon figured out how to pull the door open in "exit" mode (ie; it reached into the door gap and pulled the flap open, rather than pushing the flap into the basement. I understand that, for safety, you would want the door to function in "exit" mode in all circumstances. So, I don't see this as a flaw, but its something to be aware of as a possibility.
It was great until my youngest cat figured out that he could get his paw under the clear partition. He lifts it enough to get his paw through followed by his head then shoulders. Voila, he is in where my oldest cat was safe previously. It still works perfectly for my oldest. Just doesn't prevent the youngest even though he his chip was never scanned.
